Biting Question

I have a 20 month old that is always biting.  Of course it seems like she only bits the same child too.  She has biten this child about 6 times.  Other children too.

So this pass week she is always with me or my assitant.  If I make lunch she comes with me.  ETC.

I know it is normal but the parents are getting upset.

Does anyone have any good books or advice to share.

Jessica

Prehaps you should look into what interaction is taking place when the two are together. For the time being keep them apart for a few weeks if possible then try again.

What I do in my childcare is ask the parents to purchase a "biting toy" for the child to have with them. I usually recoment something rubbery and no bigger than a hot dog. Whe the child feels frustrated, tell them they can bite ther rubber toy instead of another child. I have found this to be very effective and keeps both set of parents satisfied.

Well, in that case, buy her a rubber biting toy, where she can use it in biting instead of other child. But be sure its not toxic and always keep an eye on her to prevent her from swallowing the toy or get choked.

There could be a number of reasons why children bite but it is just a phase. I know it's frustrating and can sometimes be embarassing to be the mother of the 'biter' in the class. My son went through the same phase at the same age. He did, however, stop biting after all of his teeth came in. I tried all types of books and teething items but nothing worked. I had to just let it run its course, asked the daycare to watch him closely , and eventually we did not have another biting issue.

I know it's not much advice but I hope it helps you a little bit.
